Senior
Mark is Chief of Staff at the University of Birmingham, a role which he has held since September 2018. He works closely with the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir David Eastwood, and the Registrar and
Secretary, Lee Sanders, to support institutional initiatives from planning through to project delivery, and to coordinate the University’s response to major external changes in higher education
regulation and policy, notably the Office for Students.
As Chief of Staff, Mark is a Senior Officer in Professional Services and leads the Executive Support division, which was established in September 2018 to bring together teams in Strategic Planning,
Strategic Change, the Executive Office, and Governance Support. Mark supports the Registrar in his work to develop the University’s Professional Services, including leading the University’s well-regarded
Birmingham Professional programme, the Graduate Management Training Scheme, and benchmarking with leading UK and Australian universities.
Mark joined the University in September 2014 as Assistant Registrar (Executive Support), in which role he worked as Executive Officer to the Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar, providing policy briefings,
project support, preparing papers, speeches and presentations. During this time Mark also set up the Strategic Change team, which supports significant change management and process improvement
initiatives across the University.
Prior to moving to the University, Mark worked for ten years in a variety of National Health Service management positions, having completed its Graduate Management Training scheme in 2006.
Mark graduated with first class honours in Music from the University of Birmingham, and has an MSc in Healthcare Leadership and Management from the Universities of Birmingham and Manchester.
